The use of visual aids to support language in Early Years maths

The importance of language as an indicator of a child’s educational success has been long established by ongoing language-based projects.  This work seeks to build on some of the research around the effective use of language to support practitioners with establishing effective mathematical discourse.

During this Work Group consideration will be given to different ways in which children learn and best practice by promoting the delivery of outstanding lessons which caters for a range of learning styles.   Fundamental to this will be the use of visual aids in supporting the development and understanding of mathematical language.

Target Audience:

School based practitioners leading the planning and provision of mathematics in Early Years (i.e. Nursery and/or Reception), particularly those who are not EYFS specialists.
