In response to local demand, this Work Group has been designed to support secondary teaching assistants in providing effective intervention in keeping with a ‘Teaching for Mastery’ approach.

Currently, there is need for ‘keep up’ (in readiness for the next day’s lesson) and ‘catch up’ for those with gaps in their mathematical understanding.

This project aims to equip secondary Teaching Assistants to:

  • support pupils who have fallen behind or are at risk of doing so

  • use a range of strategies and resources to diagnose and address weaknesses in pupils’ understanding

  • enable pupils to make better than expected progress

Audience: Secondary schools using a teaching for mastery approach, in which Teaching Assistants play a role in supporting pupils to ‘keep up’ and/or ‘catch up’
