A Graduated Approach to Supporting Maths Difficulties
Research and Innovation Work Group 2023/24

What is involved?
SENCos or members of SLT will collaborate with other schools through one full day session and 4 half day face-to-face  sessions to embed a graduated approach to supporting maths difficulties, including Dyscalculia, within their setting.
In between the sessions, gap tasks (1-2 hours each) will include identifying and assessing a pupil/pupils with maths difficulties; working with staff to support them and carrying out a learning walk. The training sessions will include input on:
  • the maths curriculum, teaching for mastery and other approaches to maths teaching
  • approaches to maths anxiety
  • current research on Dyscalculia and maths difficulties

Benefits:
  • SENCos and SLT will have a better understanding of the difficulties that pupils face and how to support them
  • Participants will be more confident in their maths subject knowledge
  • Participants will be able to evaluate how effectively pupils with SEN are being supported in their schools
  • Pupils with identified maths difficulties will have more confidence in maths

Who can take part?
SENCos or members of SLT in primary or secondary schools within the London South West Maths Hub region. (Kingston & Richmond, Merton, Sutton, Wandsworth). Participants must commit to attending all sessions and completing the gap tasks.
